Invites
A new community is invite only, so nobody can join a private server by accident. It stays invite only until an admin opens it. Open means anyone with an account from a trusted issuer may join.
Open a community or make it invite only
- Open Community settings, then Invites.
- Turn off Invite only to open the community, or turn it on to close it again.
While a community is invite only, joining needs a code. Two kinds of people never need one: the first person, who becomes the owner, and people who are already members. Someone who left or was kicked needs a new code. A banned account cannot join either way.
Make an invite link
- Open Community settings, then Invites.
- Pick how long it lasts: never, 1 day, 7 days or 30 days.
- Pick how many people may use it: no limit, 1, 5, 10 or 25.
- Click Create link. The link is copied for you.
A link looks like https://chat.example.com/invite/ABCDE23456. /i/ABCDE23456 works too. In a browser it opens the join screen of the web client with the code filled in.
Codes are 10 characters, A to Z and 2 to 7. They are not case-sensitive, and spaces around them are ignored.
Revoke a link
Revoke it on the Invites tab. It stops working at once. The list shows every link that was not revoked, newest first, with how many times each was used. Expired and used-up links stay in the list so you can see them.
On an open community
An invite link still works as a shortcut to the join screen. The code is ignored and not counted.
Through the API
CreateInvite takes expires_in_seconds (up to a year) and max_uses. ListInvites and RevokeInvite list and revoke. All three are for admins. See ServerService.
