Bots
A bot is a member of the community, shown with a bot badge. There is no separate apps system. A bot uses the same API as the app.
There are two ways to make one.
| Plugin | Bot token | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A JavaScript file on the server | A program you run anywhere |
| Who can add it | Whoever runs the server | An admin, from Community settings |
| Language | JavaScript | Any language that speaks HTTP |
| Can check who joins | Yes, with onJoin |
No |
| Slash commands | Yes, with onCommand |
Read messages and parse them yourself |
| Network and files | None | Whatever your program does |
| Read more | Plugins | Bot tokens |
Pick one
- To greet people, roll dice, post on a timer or check who may join, write a plugin. It is one file and needs nothing else.
- To connect another service, such as a build server, a feed or an AI model, run a program with a bot token.
- To connect an AI agent such as OpenClaw, NanoClaw or Hermes Agent, see AI agents.
Limits
- Bot messages never trigger plugin hooks, so two bots cannot loop.
- A bot can only post where it can see. Give it a role to let it into a limited channel.
- The server may limit how fast bots post. See
-bot-rateand-bot-burstin Configuration.
