Set up a server with AI
With AI, everyone is a developer. Setting up a server is not hard anymore. You make the accounts and pay the bill, and an assistant such as Claude does the rest.
What you need first
- An account with a hosting company, which runs your server for a monthly fee. Render is the easiest. Railway, Fly.io and any VPS also work.
- A card on file there. One community costs about $4 to $8 a month (details).
- A web address you own, such as
chat.example.org. - A Sblurp account, so you can join first and become the owner.
Give the assistant the skill
A skill is a file that teaches an AI assistant one task. Download the Sblurp skill (sblurp-host.zip).
- In Claude, open Settings, then Capabilities, then Skills, and upload the zip.
- In Claude Code, put SKILL.md at
~/.claude/skills/sblurp-host/SKILL.md. - For any other assistant, attach SKILL.md to the chat.
What to ask
Copy this and change the parts in brackets:
Set up a Sblurp community server for me. Use the sblurp-host skill.
Host: [Render]. Community name: [Night Owls].
Address: [chat.example.org]. I want backups to Cloudflare R2: [yes].
I am not a developer, so tell me each step in plain words.
The assistant tells you what to click, or runs the commands for you. If something does not work, tell it what you see.
Check it at the end
- Open app.sblurp.chat, click Add a community and enter your address.
- Join. The first person to join becomes the owner, so do this before you tell anyone the address.
- Send a message from your phone. It must appear at once on your computer.
Stay safe
- Never paste passwords or secret keys into the chat. Type them into the hosting company's website yourself.
- Read what the assistant wants to do before you say yes, mainly anything that costs money or deletes data.
- If you turn on backups, keep the backup password in a password manager. Without it, nobody can read the backups, you included.
- As the owner, you and your admins can read every message, including DMs. Tell your members.
