# Safety

Each community runs on its own server, under the rules of its owner. sblurp.chat runs only your account and your sign-in.

## Who can read your messages

Messages are encrypted between the app and the server. They are not end-to-end encrypted. The people who run a community can read everything on its server, direct messages too. Join communities that you trust. If you need a conversation that nobody else can read, use an end-to-end encrypted app such as [Signal](https://signal.org).

A community never sees your email address or your password. The server removes location and camera data from the photos that you upload.

## Protect your account

Open your [account page](/account), then **Sign-in and security**:

- Use a password of 10 characters or more. sblurp.chat refuses common passwords and passwords that contain your username.
- Add a passkey, or turn on two-factor sign-in with an authenticator app. Keep your recovery codes in a safe place.
- Look at **Where you are signed in**. Sign out any browser that you do not know, or sign out everywhere else.

After 10 wrong passwords or codes, sign-in stops for 15 minutes. A password change or a password reset signs you out of every app and every other browser. An app that was signed out loses access within 15 minutes.

## Unwanted messages and people

Any member of a community can send you a direct message. If you do not want to hear from someone, block them:

1. Open their profile from their name or picture, then choose **Block**.
2. Neither of you can send the other direct messages after that, in that community. They are not told.
3. Their messages in channels show as one collapsed line. Choose **Show** to read one.

A block holds in one community. Unblock someone from their profile, or from **Blocked members** in Settings.

To close a direct message, choose the **x** next to it in the sidebar. It comes back if someone writes in it again, so block the person if you want it to stay closed. You can also leave a private channel that you do not want, or leave a whole community from its menu.

## Report a message

If a message breaks the rules of a community, report it to the moderators of that community:

1. Point to the message, choose **More** (the three dots), then **Report message**.
2. If you want, write a note for the moderators. Then choose **Report**.

The moderators, admins and owner of the community see the message, your name, your note and the time. The person who wrote the message is not told who reported it. You cannot see the reports of other members, and you are not told what the moderators do. A report keeps a copy of the message, so the moderators can still read it if the author edits or deletes it.

You can report a message in a direct message too. Moderators cannot open your direct messages in the app. A report shares the one message that you report with them, and nothing else from the conversation. The people who run the server can still read everything on it, as explained above.

You can send 5 reports in a short time. After that, you can send 1 report every 10 minutes.

## What owners and moderators can do

Moderators read reports, delete messages, kick people and ban accounts. A banned account cannot join again. Admins also make a community invite only, limit channels to roles and set how long messages are kept. Plugins can turn people away when they join, for example by their age or by an unconfirmed email. Read [Moderation and roles](/docs/moderation), [Invites](/docs/invites) and [Plugins](/docs/plugins).

## Kids and age

You must be 13 or older to make an account. Sign-up asks for your date of birth and keeps only two answers: over 13 and over 18. Each community gets these two answers when you join. Sblurp does not hide adult content. Each community decides what it allows and who it lets in.

## Contact sblurp.chat

To report an account that breaks the [terms](/terms), write to [hello@sblurp.chat](mailto:hello@sblurp.chat). sblurp.chat does not run communities. For a problem inside a community, tell its admins first.
