# Accounts and communities

You have one Sblurp account. You can join many communities with it. The two are kept apart on purpose.

## Your account

Your account lives on sblurp.chat. It holds:

- your email address, which signs you in and resets your password,
- your username, shown as @name,
- your password, passkeys and two-factor sign-in,
- an optional profile: display name, pronouns, bio and avatar,
- whether you are over 13 and over 18. Sign-up asks for your date of birth but keeps only these two answers.

Change these at [sblurp.chat/account](/account). Download everything sblurp.chat keeps about you from the "Your data" section there.

## Change your username

Your username is how people know you, so changes are limited:

- You can change it once every 30 days. The profile page shows the date of your next change.
- Nobody else can take your old username for 90 days. In that time, you can change back to it.
- After 90 days, anyone can take your old username.

Communities that you joined before the change still show your old username. Your messages and mentions stay linked to you, because a community knows you by your account id, not by your username.

## A community

A community is one server. It keeps its own channels, messages, files and member list. Each community is run by someone: its owner. The owner and the admins they choose make the rules.

## What a community sees about you

When you join, the community server learns:

- your account id and username,
- whether your email address is confirmed,
- whether you said you are over 13 and over 18,
- the profile details you chose to share when you joined.

It never sees your email address or your password. The sign-in token it gets carries no profile data. The app sends your profile only after you agree on the join screen.

## Your profile in each community

The join screen lets you share your display name, avatar and bio, one switch each. Bio is off by default. After you join you can change your name, picture, bio and status in each community on its own. A change in one community does not change the others.

## Privacy and encryption

Messages are encrypted between the app and the server. They are not end-to-end encrypted. The people who run a community can read its messages, direct messages too. Pick communities you trust, and tell your members this if you run one. If you need a conversation that nobody else can read, use an end-to-end encrypted app such as [Signal](https://signal.org).

## Leaving

Leave a community from its menu. The owner cannot leave. You may join again later, and you come back as the same member. Deleting your sblurp.chat account stops it from signing in anywhere. Messages you posted stay on each community's server; ask its admins to remove them.
